Urbanization-Induced Diurnal Variation in Short-Duration Rainfall Events in Wuhan, China

Increasing of evidence suggests that rapid urbanization modifies precipitation and increases atmospheric instability in urban areas mainly due to heat island (UHI)-induced thermal effects building-induced dynamic effects. However, few studies focus on the impact diurnal variations rainfall terms initiating time, frequency, amount, intensity. Here, six years hourly data from a relatively dense meteorological observation network Wuhan area central China are used quantify issue urbanization-induced short-duration (SDR) events by comparing surrounding rural stations during summer dry period (13 July 4 August), corresponding hot weather with little high evaporation. The results indicate that: (i) A higher frequency appears night-time afternoon over as compared areas. is more concentrated night-time; (ii) More stronger SDR triggered areas, especially amount intensity events. greater urban–rural difference detected than mean rainfall; (iii) There an enhancement when UHI before they initiated, this detectable It also found UHI-induced main reason for nocturnal period, which caused convection current water vapor flux convergence
